Trip to BVE

Today I went to BVE (Broadcast Video Exhibition). BVE is the leading Entertainment and Media Tec event in the UK and attracts more than 15 000 visitors and 300 leading manufacturers and distributors such as Canon, Adobe, Arri and Loke. I thought it could be a good chance for some networking and to learn more about the TV industry here in Britain. And of course to take a look at different cameras, equipment, software etc.

BVE has a 20-year history dedicated to the broadcast, production and post-production sectors, and has in recent years evolved into an all-encompassing event that covers Connected Media, AV systems Integration, Live Production, VR and creative sectors. The expo gives the opportunity to discover, test and experiment with the latest gear, technology, software and services - from 4k, HDR, up to OTT, LIVE IP, VR and more.

"It's the single most important event of the year for meeting, debating and discussing the technical aspects of broadcasting in the UK." - Television operations manager, BBC

At the expo I talked with a couple of people from different universities, mainly MetFilm School and National Film and Television School since I'm debating of taking a MA in cinematography after I graduate from UCA. I was then given some advice regarding my portfolio and was also told about the  Edinburgh International Television Festival which is being held in August and the networking programme.

I also went to a couple of the seminars, one about cinematography in animation and another one about called "secrets of the self-shooter" where Rick Young were talking about how to pack the right kit to get the perfect shoot and how to be prepared for when equipment fails.
Last I went Adobe's hands-on training where they were doing a 1-hour session about colour grading and finishing in Premiere. The session was really helpful as it thought me about features in Premiere which I've never used such as adjustment layers, match frames, adding clips as masters when colouring etc.

I found the expo really interesting and I learned a lot. It was also nice to get to talk with experts about gears, software and different techniques and get to try out different cameras, riggs, VR technology and such.
